Alameda, Calif. -- Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine will follow in the footsteps of Cornell by launching a new shelter medicine program with a grant from the nonprofit Maddie's Fund.

St. Simons Island, Ga. -- The Simmons Education Fund has that it increase the prize amounts it awards to veterinary students through its Business Aptitude Award Program to $100,000.

Madison, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine is starting a new campaign to bring former students back to campus - for research.

Davis, Calif. -- The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine will be a part of a new School of Global Health at University of California, San Francisco, thanks to a $4 million grant from the Bill and Melina Gates Foundation.

Corvallis, Ore. -- The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University received a full five-year accreditation from the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians based on a three-day site visit last August.

Philadelphia -- The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the Aresty Institute of Executive Education at the Wharton School of Business are teaming up to offer what is being called the Executive Veterinary Leadership Program.

Perry, Iowa -- The American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation (AASVF) is accepting applications for the Hogg Scholarship through Feb. 2, 2009.

Fort Collins, Colo. -- Colorado State University is working to make a difference a world away, by organizing a donation of tetanus vaccines for about 5,000 working horses and donkeys in Ethiopia.

College Station, Texas -- If confirmed next month, Dr. Eleanor M. Green will be the next dean at Texas A&M's veterinary college.

Manhattan, Kan. -- There soon will be online help for veterinarians with camelid questions, thanks to a $20,000 gift to Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine from the Mid-America Alpaca Foundation.

Ithaca, N.Y. -- Researchers at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine have developed a vaccine against Johne's disease, a contagious, chronic and often fatal infection.

Kennett Square, Pa. - Is this country ready for an agroterrorism attack? The FBI recently worked with the veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. Six Penn veterinary students participated.

Knoxville, Tenn.- A $5 million federal grant will help the University of Tennessee develop training programs for animal-related disasters.

Boston - Henry L. Foster, DVM, died of cancer Oct. 14. Foster helped found Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

Pullman, Wash.- Dr. Warwick Bayley became provost of Washington State University resigning his position as dean of the veterinary college.

Schaumberg, Ill. -- A comprehensive online continuing-education program will be unveiled by the American Veterinary Medical Association Dec. 1.

Davis, Calif. -- Earthquakes and fires happen often enough in the state that the University of California, Davis is developing a program to offer large-animal emergency response training.

Lafayette, Ind. -- The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine is going to the dogs this summer, when the school teams with the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette to place decorated, life-size dog statues throughout the area in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the veterinary college and the 100th anniversary of the art museum.

Corvallis, Ore. -- Dr. Christopher Cebra, an Oregon State University (OSU) faculty member since 1997, recently was named the new head of the department of clinical sciences at the school's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Columbus, Ohio -- The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) has elected a new president, Dr. Michael D. Lairmore of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and a veterinarian with the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Kennett Square, Pa. -- The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine broke ground on its new state-of-the-art James M. Moran Jr. Critical Care Center at Penn Vet's new Bolton Center.

Corvallis, Ore. -- Dr. Helen Diggs has been named director of the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Oregon State University.

DAVIS, CALIF. - As public perception of animal welfare has changed, the need for education has increased, which is why the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine formed the International Animal Welfare Training Institute.

SCHAUMBURG, ILL. - The American Veterinary Medical Assocation's Council on Education (COE) granted a request from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UnAM) for a site visit, which is a preliminary step in the accreditation process. The COE made a consultative visit in 2006, after which it made recommendations for what the school could do - such as facilities upgrades and curriculum completion - to receive accreditation.

Montgomery, Ala. - Auburn University was criticized in a report by the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for not properly documenting revenues from pet-food sales at its small-animal hospital. The report also questioned the use of some of those funds.

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Three candidates are on the short list to replace Richard Adams, DVM, PhD, as dean of Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

A look at veterinary-school architectural plans sheds light on how the profession is changing.

Pullman, Wash. -- The dean of Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will permanently step down at the end of the month to take over the duties of WSU provost full-time.

Philadelphia -- The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine will accept nominations for its World Leadership in Animal Health Award until Dec. 1.

The California Veterinary Medical Board (CVMB) officially approved a regulatory change Oct. 22 that will allow veterinary assistants with five years of clinical experience and at least 24 hours of formal education to take the California State Registered Veterinary Technician Exam between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.
